Data Federation

DATA FEDERATION is mapping multiple database systems into a single, virtualized version of the databases. This technique allows for flexible views of the data and quick access. Data federation enables interaction with multiple data sources without moving the source data, a once-radical idea that reduces the inefficiencies of making copies of data. Federation requires fanning queries to underlying sources using caching, which can be problematic. Since the queries run on remote systems, performance relies on the speed and stability of the source systems. Your virtualized database is only as good as its slowest source. Data federation alone is not scalable for large amounts of data nor a high volume of simultaneous users.
